Nonprofit organization, Mars-One.com, plans to fund a colonization of the Red Planet with a blend of crowd sourcing and ultimate reality TV. Thus far, their plan is to acquire one million entries from private citizen for $25 each along with a 60-second video of why you'd be a good candidate to go to Mars. If selected, get ready for a seven year long training course.
Here's the catch.... you won't be coming home to Earth. The Mars One mission calls for a 2018 rover mission first to scout out the best place for the colonization base. Next some supplies will be shuttled up, and then by 2020, the first four astronauts will step foot on Mars, and get the honor of calling it home. Over the course of a few years, the rest of the 20 astronauts will join them in a pod-type civilization.
Mars One apparently already has private support for materials and supplies from a variety of private space entities, so they will be able to operate without the interference of politics. Mars One CEO, Bas Lansdorp, plans to have the entire process documented, recorded and broadcast live for the entire world to watch man reach out to a new world, and create a new home there.
Needless to say, this sounds pretty incredible, but Mars One is set on making it a reality. What do you think? Would you go?
